Seasonal French-speaking Guide - Edinburgh (part-time)

Key responsibilities

French-speaking Guide

  • You will perform an average of 5 walking tours per week (groups between 1 and 20 people, tours are between 2 hours and 4 hours long) 

  • You have a fine interest in, if not already a good knowledge of, Edinburgh and its surroundings. You will receive training from us and be provided with any content needed for the tours, but encouraged to enrich it as you gain experience.

Sales and touristic advice (when required)

  • You will welcome tourists within Source, our sister company. Source is an independent tourist information centre. We offer free maps, leaflets and advice to travellers. You will be asked to recommend places and activities within Edinburgh and beyond. 

  • Retail & sales assistance. Source has its own mini artisan shop and we sell locally made souvenirs as well as books and tickets for various tours and activities. You will assist our team through these tasks.

Job details

The Essentials:

  • 20h per week (ideally Sunday to Thursday), with opportunities for overtime in high season

  • Hourly salary of £14 

  • Fixed term contract to start on 1st of April 2025 and finish on 31/10/2025 (negotiable)

  • Working hours usually from 9/10am to 5/6pm, occasional evening work up to 8pm (to be discussed case by case)

  • Fixed pattern of worked days to be determined together 

  • Statutory holidays & sick pay

Your profile

Must-haves:

  • Fluency in both French (oral and written) and English 

  • Right to work in the UK (please note that we CANNOT hire anyone who does not already have the right to work in the UK)

  • High autonomy and sense of initiative

  • A habit to work with your voice

  • A taste for performing, an easiness to capture your audience’s attention

  • An experience in a client-facing role, ideally in tourism or hospitality

  • Easy contact with any type of public

  • Team spirit and good collaboration skills

  • High interest in anything related to Edinburgh and the Scottish culture as a whole

  • High awareness of your environment (physical environment, sense of propriety)

  • This roles involves getting in and out Edinburgh city centre on a daily basis

  • This roles involves walking outdoors for up to 8 hours a day

Even better if you have:

  • Great knowledge of Edinburgh & Scotland 

  • Previous experience as a tour guide 

  • Previous experience in tourism or hospitality 

  • Writing skills

We are constantly on the lookout for talented french-speaking guides to join our team of freelance guides.

Are you based in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness? We invite a all passionate guides-in-the-making to join us and share their talent and love of Scotland with us and our visitors.

Key responsibilities

French-speaking guide

  • Lead walking tours and be the face of Wee Eccosse  (tours vary between 2 to 4 hours for groups of between 1 and 20 people). 

  • Have a keen interest in Edinburgh/Glasgow/Inverness and their surroundings. While training and content will be provided, your personal touch will make all the difference.

Job details

The Essentials:

  • Freelance position - paid on a monthly basis, depending on how many tours you undertake

  • Tours will be allocated to our team of freelance guides on a first-come, first served basis.

  • Compensation: £100 per 3-hour tour

  • Fully adaptable around your existing commitments and schedule

  • Paid mandatory training provided.

Your profile

Essential qualities:

  • Fluency in both French (oral and written) and English 

  • UK work eligibility (please note that if you do not already have the right to work in the UK, we will NOT be able to work with you)

  • Highly autonomous with a proactive attitude. 

  • Comfortable in vocal communication, with the ability to engage and captivate an audience

  • Experience in a client-facing role, preferably in tourism or hospitality

  • Ability to connect with a diverse range of people

  • Strong team spirit and collaborative skills

  • Genuine interest in Scottish culture

  • High environmental and situational awareness 

  • Ability to commute to and from Edinburgh city centre

  • A desire to work outdoors - this role involves walking outdoors for up to 8 hours a day

Added advantages:

  • Prior tour guiding experience
